During Stanfour’s “October Sky Tour”, we played a very special concert in Zurich, Switzerland. Until minutes before the show, we weren’t sure it would happen, because the truck with the equipment got stuck at the border due to it being overweight and strict swiss border control. Luckily the support band supported us more than usual that night with their equipment and instruments. In most cases the setups of 2 Bands wouldn’t have been as compatible, but we got lucky. One small problem still remained, I played a xylophone in addition to a re-arranged acoustic version of the song “For All The Lovers”. Needless to say, the xylophone didn’t cross the border either. After searching a big mall close to the venue I found a childs xylophon in a toys store, bought it and tried to fix the tines to be able to play the song. This toy was roughly tuned in C-Major, but the song is in C-Flat Minor. Therefore I had to change nearly every tine with a leatherman tool from a crew member. It annoyed the hell out of everybody for hours. Tweaking, rasping and fine tuning. Finally this song made everybody on stage and in the audience smile and I think most people were surprised this little enterprise actually worked out. To be honest, I was, too.

First of all I have to talk about my favourite instrument, when it comes to keyboards: I play a Fender Rhodes Mark II. It is 3 years older than me, so I naturally treat it with the respect an older brother deserves. I had much luck to find such a well-preserved instrument. And I try to keep it that way although some experiences on stage have already leaved their marks. Carrying the old lady is not always a pleasure but with great power comes great responsibility or so… Haha… Whenever possible, I try to make it happen because it’s just the most natural instrument for me when a grand piano is not available. I have to stop telling stories at this point, because it would get too emotional ^^ I heard about drummers sleeping with their cymbals and stuff…

I always try to break it down as much as possible. More instruments not always mean more creativity. Just the opposite was the case in my experience. I often think a grand piano or rhodes is just the best solution for so many genres if you know how to use it right. But still, sometimes there is a need to add a different flavour. The first step in this direction was always the MOOG for me, because I grew up listening to Herbie’s Music all day long and fell in love with the dark and warm analog sounds this synthesizer does. In the near past I started to play a lot with this amazing toy and tried to think non-pianistic, more as a bass or horn player. If necessary NORD is always a good solution, especially on festivals with little time for change over or rehearsals with a “sound-searching” approach. You got the flexibility of a modern keyboard, but the possibility of creating a vintage sound. Sometimes there is a need to be as close as possible in the choice of sounds, that were used on the album production. Therefore I use a standard Midi-Keyboard connected to Pro Tools or Main Stage. Last but not least I use a little chair, which was a great gift of a very good friend of mine. It really brings “atmosphere” in this whole setup … Haha …
